This rugged mountain pass is an area well known for its unique history, stunning scenery and plentiful outdoor activities. Independence Mine was home to miners and homesteaders throughout the early 20th century. Today, it’s known as Independence Mine State Historical Park. Many historic abandoned mining buildings are still standing to explore and some are said to be haunted. Locals know this location for the incredible drive along a raging blue river, through beautiful alpine meadows and up to a high mountain summit lake. The area has many outstanding hiking opportunities to choose from and an abundance of flora and fauna.

On your journey, drive through Hatcher Pass, explore Independence Mine State Historical Park, hike one of Hatcher Pass’ most majestic trails and enjoy a relaxing drive back down the pass to Anchorage.
