Private Mat-Su Valley Tours from Anchorage — Knik Glacier Country
The Matanuska-Susitna Valley sits about 45 minutes north of Anchorage and most visitors never get there. That’s a shame, because it’s where Alaska stops being a postcard and starts being real — glacier-fed rivers, working farms, reindeer, sand dunes along the Knik River, and Pioneer Peak rising straight out of the valley floor.
Every tour is private. Your group only, no shared vans, no fixed stops you didn’t ask for. The route and pace adjust to what your group actually wants.

The Knik Glacier Valley — What You'll See
The Old Glenn Highway runs north from Anchorage through the Butte and Palmer into the Knik Valley — one of the most dramatic glacial corridors in Southcentral Alaska. Knik Glacier sits about 25 miles up the valley, and the outwash plain in front of it stretches for miles in every direction. Everything you walk on out there was under that glacier as recently as 200 years ago.
Along the way you'll pass through Palmer, founded in 1935 as part of FDR's Matanuska Colony Project — one of the most unusual social experiments in American history. The Colony-era downtown is still largely intact. The farms are still running. The history is right there in the streets.
What's Typically Included on a Mat-Su Valley Day Tour
Every tour is customized to your group. A day in the valley typically includes:
- Ship Creek narration leaving Anchorage — the city's birthplace, the 1964 earthquake, the port
- Old Glenn Highway scenic drive — glacial valley history, Pioneer Peak, Mat-Su farmland
- Knik Flats glacier pullout — walk on the outwash plain, views to Knik Glacier
- Reindeer Farm stop — 30 minutes with the animals
- Butte area and Matanuska River overlook
- Bushes Bunches produce stand or Big Dipper ice cream from Matanuska Creamery
- Downtown Palmer drive-through — Colony history narration, optional Colony Museum stop
- Return via Eagle River with Denali views on clear days

Private Adventure Add-Ons — Build Your Own Day
Because every tour is private, you can combine the scenic valley route with any of the following experiences. Each is booked in advance and folded into your tour schedule.
Alaska Zipline Adventure Park — Palmer
Six side-by-side ziplines through the Sunderland Ranch property in Palmer. Heights up to 255 feet, speeds up to 45 mph, nearly 4,000 feet of total zipping. Two-hour experience. Hummer ride to the course start, automatic braking on every line, salmon stream views from above. This is one of the most spectacular zipline setups in the state.
Horseback Riding on the Knik River — Alaska Horse Adventures
A 1.5-hour private ride through forested trails, across sand dunes, and down to the Knik River beach with Pioneer Peak and Knik Glacier as the backdrop. Weather permitting, the route crosses Jim Creek and reaches the open river shoreline. Operates year-round. Ages 6 and up. All riders must be able to mount from the ground independently.

Tour Timing and Departure Options
The base Mat-Su Valley scenic tour runs approximately four hours from Anchorage pickup to drop-off. We offer morning and afternoon departures — morning gives you the best glacier views and the quietest window at the Reindeer Farm; afternoon lines up with the Colony Museum hours and golden light over the valley.
Add-on experiences extend the total time and omit some of the scenic stops — the zipline adds two hours, the horseback ride adds 1.5 hours. We build the schedule around your group and whatever you've booked.
Morning Departure — 9:30 AM
Best Denali visibility. Sharpest glacier sightlines at Knik Flats. Reindeer Farm at opening — quietest window of the day. Colony Museum is closed on this departure; full Palmer narration delivered from the van. Returns by approximately 1:00 PM base, later with add-ons.
Afternoon Departure — 1:00 PM
Colony Museum open mid-afternoon — included in the stop. Golden afternoon light over the Matanuska Valley. Great option for cruise guests or late arrivals. Returns by approximately 5:00 PM base, later with add-ons.

Frequently Asked Questions
How far is the Mat-Su Valley from Anchorage?
The Matanuska-Susitna Valley is approximately 45 minutes north of downtown Anchorage via the Glenn Highway. The Old Glenn Highway scenic route adds about 20 minutes and is the recommended outbound route for the views.
Can we combine the Mat-Su Valley tour with a cruise transfer?
Yes. If your cruise departs from Seward or Whittier, we can structure a day that includes a Mat-Su Valley excursion before continuing to the port. Timing depends on your cruise departure — contact us to plan the routing.
Is the Knik Glacier accessible on a day tour?
The glacier itself is about 25 miles up the valley. Getting to the glacier face requires either a jet boat, ATV or helicopter tour with a partner operator, which can be added to your Wild Journeys day. We stop at the outwash plain on every base tour.
What should we wear and bring?
Layers are always the right answer in Alaska. Even in summer, temperatures can shift significantly between Anchorage and the valley. Closed-toe shoes are required for any add-on adventure experiences. Snacks and water are provided in the van.
Do you run Mat-Su Valley tours year-round?
The scenic valley tour runs May through September. Some add-on partners, including Alaska Horse Adventures, operate year-round. Contact us if you're visiting outside the summer window and we'll tell you what's available.
Also Traveling by Cruise?
Wild Journeys runs private cruise transfers between Anchorage and the Seward and Whittier ports. If you're arriving or departing by ship, we can combine your port transfer with a Mat-Su Valley stop, or book them separately depending on your itinerary.
